About us

Jordi Solé Tura, from Mollet del Vallès, always had an intense relationship with its village. In this relationship are two highlights. On one hand, when in 1998 the Council gave Jordi Solé Tura the Medal of the City and was named Eminent Citizen of Mollet del Vallès. And on the other hand, when he expressed the will of working in a project that ensured and streghted its connection with his home town and at the same time promoted Mollet del Vallès.

So the 23rd of April of 2003 the Council of Mollet del Vallès and Jordi Solé Tura signed an agreement by which he wanted to give a part of his documentary collection to Mollet del Vallès.

In turn, the Council of Mollet del Vallès commits itself to create the basis so that the city can have an institution that will go deep in research and debate of democracy as a doctrine and political system of government and society organisation.

So, on the 30th of April of 2003, the Municipal Council created the Centre d'Estudis per la Democràcia. The aim of this centre is to promote, support and collaborate in different projects or studies that debate democracy and that its main base is the career of Jordi Solé Tura.

Before creating the centre, and with the will of integrating the universities in the project, because of the connection of Jordi Solé Tura with universities, there were conversations with chancellorships of three Catalan universities: the Universitat de Barcelona, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The three universities were interested in taking part on the project of Mollet del Vallès.

In 2005 the Advisory Council of the Centre d'Estudis per la Democràcia (made up by professors) was formed in Mollet del Vallès.

On the 3rd of November of 2007 was presented the first call for the Jordi Solé Tura Award for a doctoral thesis on democracy, and a year later, the first award was given.

The second and third awards were given respectively, on the 3rd of November of 2009 and on the 4rd of November of 2010, always coinciding with the “Day of the City” of Mollet del Vallès, which is the day in which was discovered the first document with the name of the city (Moledo) on it.

On the 21st of December of 2009, with the death of Jordi Solé Tura (4th of December), the Municipal Council decided to change the name of Centre d'Estudis per la Democràcia, into “Centre d'Estudis per la Democràcia Jordi Solé Tura”. As well, the Council agreed to name “Jordi Solé Tura” the next library of the city.

On the 25 th of May of 2010, in Mollet del Vallès, was presented the Group of Friends of Jordi Solé Tura, with more than three hundred supporters.
